Deserted Theatre from 1970s

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Access: Medium
Status: Still standing

The theatre opened in 1979 as a cinema and has over 1,000 seats. It is divided into
front, back and special stalls and has the scale of a traditional cinema. After it
was closed, the venue was converted into a large-scale theatre from 2005 to 2008,
which mainly provided entertainment performances for tourist groups. It has
been deserted since 2008, and various articles in the theatre were scattered.

The background setting on the main stage is quite ornate. There is some graffiti.
Upon entering the theatre on my third visit, I was surprised to find guiding lights
still lit on the floor. The stage lights can be turned on as well.

Tang Ancestral Hall of Ha Tsuen

The Tang Ancestral Hall, aka Yau Kung Tong, was constructed by the Tang
clan of Ha Tsuen, Yuen Long, to commemorate their two founding ancestors,
Tang Hung-chi and Tang Hung-wai, for establishing the village settlements in
Ha Tsuen. Construction began in 1749, it was completed in 1750.

The hall underwent 2 major renovations, one in the 17th year of the Daoguang reign
(1837) and in the 9th year of the Guangxu reign (1883). Most of the historic building's
fabric and relics are still preserved in the hall. There are a number of
honorary plaques hanging in the middle hall, indicating the glorious history of
the Tangs in the Qing imperial government.

The Tang Ancestral Hall is one of the few surviving local examples of Qing
vernacular architecture in the three-hall, two-courtyard layout. The historic
architectural components and relics are well preserved. Nowadays, it still serves
as a venue for important religious and ceremonial events of the Tang clan.
It was declared a monument in 2008 and restored in 2011.

Bizarre Display at "Zombie Mall"

A bizarre display of life-size paper dolls, with other funeral supplies, playing
mahjong in a "dead shopping centre" is particularly weird looking during
the Hungry Ghost (Yulan) Festival.

The Fu Lee Loy Shopping Centre in North Point started operations in the 1980s.
It is only 5 minutes away from Fortress Hill MTR (subway) Station. It was
once one of the three major "dead" shopping centres, with most of the shops
closed, in Hong Kong. In 2020, the tenants spontaneously revitalised it.
Recently, as almost 95% of the shops are either vacant or closed, it is known
as a "Zombie Mall" again.

Deserted Century-old Mysterious Study Hall

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Access: Medium - difficult to find
Status: Dilapidated

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted study hall.

Built before 1924, the study hall has exquisite architecture, with green glazed
ceramic ventilation tiles, Western-style sculptured doors, and walls made of
blue bricks and granite. The craftsmanship is extraordinary.

It is not easy to find as there is no record of the study hall. None of the
villagers have heard of it, not even the village elders. Only the next
door neighbour knows about its history. Apparently, it is the private
study hall of the Tang clan. It has been derelict for decades. Most
of the roof has collapsed.

Deserted Haunted Villa from 1920s

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Access: Easy
Status: Still Standing

The villa was built in 1927 in Classical Revival architecture with symmetrical plan.
An imposing entrance gives access to a large central reception hall with rooms
on either side in the Palladian style. The side rooms extend to the rear as wings
to form a three-sided courtyard.

A staircase gives access to the upper floor. A classical red-brick facade featuring
white painted columns, balustrades, and window surrounds, is a style popular in
Edwardian times. A segmental pediment surrounds the projecting central bay
over the entrance porch, and a domed cupola is situated on the flat roof
behind the pediment. The first floor has shuttered windows. A European-
style fountain stands in front.

The mansion was owned by a rich Choi family. After the death of the owner in
1944, the family members moved away and the house was deserted, falling into
disrepair. It is said that 7 people were drowned there and it is haunted. Rumour
has it that during the night, people heard women screaming and crying.

It was rated as a Grade I historic building in 2007 and then Grade II in 2010.

Urban exploration is based on the principles of take nothing except picture, leave no trace
and not revealing the location.
