Olga Explores Deserted Hakka Mansion from 1930s
Multi-talented Olga Filatova, a tech investment/marketing consultant and art lover from St Petersburg,
ventures into a deserted Hakka mansion.
An elegant traditional Hakka mansion, hidden behind bushes, has been long deserted, with bushes
growing in front of the house. Built in 1932, the mansion is typical of the Hakka 'two-halls
two-horizontal' residential building in Mei County, Guangdong. It is the only single
residential building in Hong Kong listed as a Grade I historic building.
The exquisite lion carvings on both sides of the gate beam have been removed. The
half-moon-shaped fengshui pond in front of the house has been overrun by reeds
and weeds, and the eaves are dilapidated and in disrepair.
The whole mansion has 16 rooms, 6 halls and two inner courtyards. The halls form the
central axis of the house, with rooms on either side, including bedrooms and kitchens.
The courtyards has a pond each, and the wooden doors of the rooms are exquisitely carved.
Both design and colour are tasteful. Since it has been abandoned for many years,
most of the furniture are gone.

Deserted Amusement Park in Taiwan
An avid urban explorer ventures into an deserted amusement park.
The theme park opened in 1981 and became one of the most popular attractions on the island.
Up to a million visitors would come annually. Its downfall was connected to the destructive Jiji
earthquake, which struck the country in September 1999. Known locally as 921 earthquake
(the exact date was 21.9.1999) and measuring 7.6-magnitude, Jiji earthquake killed 2,415
people, left a further 100,000 plus homeless and caused billions of dollars of damage. It was
the worse tremor to hit the country since 1935. Central Taiwan was especially affected.
Many businesses, including this theme park, struggled in the aftermath. The park did reopen
but it never returned to its glory days. Many of its attractions, including expensive-to-maintain
technical ones, were either damaged or destroyed by the quake and eventually financial
issues and dwindling visitor numbers forced the owners to close.

Yilan Lanyang Museum
The Lanyang Museum is designed to reflect the unique history, the culture, and the landscape
in Lanyang. In addition to reconstructing the harbour’s history, the museum also
introduces Yilan’s rich wetland ecology as a part of an outdoor exhibition.
Its dominant geometry is inspired by the natural Cuesta rock formation, commonly found
on the coast. By inserting the triangular mass into the ground at an angle, the minimalist
architectural geometry mimics the nearby terrain.
