City-centre Market Derelict for 14 Years

Built in 1963, Tang Lung Chau Market, 19 Jardine's Bazaar, Causeway Bay, is at
the heart of the busiest shopping district in Hong Kong, 3 minutes walk from
the nearest MTR (subway) station. The first floor of the market was closed in
2010, but it has remained derelict for over 14 years. Only a few stores are
open on the ground floor with many used for storage only.

A NGO group applied to hold a short-term market there in 2021, but the authorities
refused saying it was closed. Wanchai District Councilor Peggy Lee Pik-yee
asked at a council meeting, saying that vacant markets were a waste of public
funds and hoped that the authorities would re-examine their use, to no avail.
