Thousands Protest Controversial Huge Reclamation Plan

Thousands rally against Chief Executive's controversial proposal for 1,700 hectares
of reclaimed land at an estimated cost of up to HK$500 billion (US$63.8 billion).
Critics argue that budget overrun would easily double the government estimates
and exhaust the entire fiscal reserve of Hong Kong plus being environmentally harmful.

Families with young children, senior citizens, young people and political
parties, are among protesters marching from Causeway Bay to the government
headquarters. Chief Executive Carrie Lam is also critised for ignoring the
government-appointed Task Force on Land Supply who had yet to present its
findings on a recently concluded public consultation exercise.

Disqualified pro-democracy legislator Lau Siu-lai attends a protest, after her
bid to stand in a by-election had been rejected for advocating self-determination,

before the decision. Agnes Chow of Demosisto party was banned from
contesting a separate by-election in January, fuelling fears of tightening
political 'red lines' by Beijing that could deny Hong Kong’s disaffected
young people from participating in official political establishment.
