Queen's College Democracy Wall

On the democracy wall at Queen's College, one of the leading government high
(secondary) school in Hong Kong, yellow banners of 'I want real universal
suffrage' proliferate, reflecting the aspiration of the elite students.

On 18 November, a giant banner reading 'I want real universal suffrage' hung
prominantly on the facade of Queen's College to great embarassment of
officials from the government Education Bureau who were meeting there.

Mask on Tent

A Guy Fawkes mask is seen hanging on a yellow tent with a banner reading 'I want
real universal suffrage' after the rain and raindrops are still visible.

The mask is a stylised depiction of Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot,
an attempt to blow up the House of Lords in London in 1605. The mask became a
symbol for the Occupy movement and other anti-establishment protests around
the world after it was used 'V for Vendetta', published in 1982, and its
2006 film adaptation.

Radicals Want to Dismantle Main Stage

A small splinter group of protesters went to Admiralty Occupy zone to demand
that the main stage there be dismantled and the marshal system be disbanded.
They said that the Occupy leaders do not represent them and the marshals
tried to stop people from attacking Legislative Council building. Protesters
camping at the site describe the radicals as 'troublemakers'. Student
leaders debated with them and explained the need for the stage and marshals.

Totoro Supports Umbrella Movement?

A giant poster of Totoro, a character in the 1988 Japanese animated film 'My
Neighbour Totoro' by Hayao Miyazaki, holding a yellow umbrella - the symbol
of the Umbrella Movement, appears in Causeway Bay and Mongkok Occupy zones.
In the film, the protagonist Satsuki offers Totoro her umbrella on a rainy
night, just as one of the protesters offered his umbrella to a policeman.

Totoro in the poster wears a yellow hard hat with his right arm wrapped in
rubber mat squares, just like the protesters for protection against police
batons. Numerous symbols like Jesus, General Guan, giant banner on Lion
Rock, police pepper-spraying, etc are integrated into the poster. This
is representative of the many creative art forms springing up all over
the Occupy zones.

Watching the Fall of Berlin Wall 25 Years On

The 25th anniversary of the historic fall of the Berlin Wall was celebrated
at Cattle Depot in Hong Kong as a video of the event was projected onto
a replica of the Wall.

For 28 years, the Berlin Wall which was erected in 12-13 August 1961 was both
the physical division between West Berlin and East Germany and the symbolic
'Iron Curtain' between democracy and Communism during the Cold War.

Fall of Berlin Wall 25th Anniversary

For 28 years, the Berlin Wall which was erected in 12-13 August 1961 was both
the physical division between West Berlin and East Germany and the symbolic
'Iron Curtain' between democracy and Communism during the Cold War.

On 9 November 1989, as the Cold War began to thaw across Eastern Europe, East
German government, after several weeks of civil unrest, announced that their
citizens could visit West Berlin and West Germany. Thousands of East Germans
crossed and climbed onto the wall. Over the next few weeks, euphoric public
chipped away parts of the wall. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way
for German reunification on 3 October 1990.

The 25th anniversary of this historic event is celebrated at Cattle Depot
in Hong Kong.
