  Exploring Deserted School Hostel

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted school hostel.

The school was founded in 1947 by the head of the nearby village. In 1955, a church took over
the school and constructed a new school building on the current site. In 1963, the construction
of a hostel began. The construction of the 2-storey building was suspended by villagers on the
grounds of bad fung shui. The building has been deserted since then. There are lots of graffiti
on the Walls, 2 pianos are found while trees and vines grow on the outside.

Former Home of Artist Huang Yong-yu at Kau Wa Keng Historic Tsang Residence

The Tsang Residence at No. 22, Kau Wa Keng Old Village was built between 1934 and 1937.
During 1940s to 1950s, it was home to many left-wing intellectuals and artists, such as
Wang Ren-shu, Lou Shi-yi and prominent Chinese painter Huang Yong-yu. There was no
water supply at the time and residents drew water from a large slate well next to the house.
It has been abandoned since the 1990s and was rated as a Grade III historic building in 2010.

Kau Wa Keng was originally called the "Dog Climbing Path" as it was located in the hills with
extremely steep paths. Villagers went home like puppies climbing the hills. The old village has
a history of over 300 years. It can be traced back to the native inhabitant village of the New
Territories after the revocation of the inland migration order by Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty.

The village was built in the countryside in the hills and visitors will feel a sense of going back in
time when visiting. Walking along winding paths into the village, one can spot elegant
buildings from the 1920s and 1930s occasionally. Most of the squatter village designs
retain the appearance of the old days. There is also a chic bridge with gurgling water.
A rare and tranquil beauty in the city.

12 projects in Kau Wa Keng, including Yeung Ching Study Hall and ancestral halls of 3 clans
are rare buildings in Hong Kong with a history of over a century of combined Chinese and
Western designs. They have just been rated as Grade III historic buildings.

Fat Tat Tong - Declared Monument

Fat Tat Tong, built in 1933, is not only a testament to the prominence of a renowned Hakka family in the
area obut also a typical example of residences of an eclectic style popular with returned overseas Chinese
in the early 20th century in the territory.

Fat Tat Tong was built by Li To Wan-tso, a trust formed by the 4 sons of Li To-wan in Ha Wo Hang,
Sha Tau Kok, New Territories. Li To-wan was a descendant of the Li clan of Wo Hang. Like many young
adults of Sha Tau Kok going abroad to make a livelihood in the late 19th century, Li To-wan went to
Vietnam to earn a living at a young age. He and his family returned to Ha Wo Hang with a modest fortune.

Li To-wan's eldest son, Li Kwan-lan, was an influential community leader of Sha Tau Kok and was appointed
as one of the three "Tsz Yi" of Sha Tau Kok District in 1936 by the Governor to give advice on matters of
local affairs and disputes. The appointment of Tsz Yi was regarded as a conferment of great honour by
 the Governor at the time.

Fat Tat Tong is a 2-storey residence with a long pitched Hakka style tiled roof and fronted by a flat-roofed
colonnaded verandah which is crowned by an ornamental parapet that resembles a stream of rolling
clouds. Traditional green brick and timber as well as modern reinforced concrete are used for the
construction. Chinese-style sliding doors constructed of metal at all front entrances and rows of
windows with metal hoods at the ground floor level are used to enhance the security of the building.
The building contains 5 interconnected houses, each with its own entrance on the ground floor.
Nowadays, Fat Tat Tong still serves as a residence for the descendants of Li To-wan.

It was rated a Grade I historic building in 2010 and a declared monument in 2013.
