Exploring Abandoned Pre-war Theatre
An avid urban explorer ventures into an abandoned theatre.
Built in 1931, the 2 storeys high pre-war theatre has an area of about 30,000 sq ft. It is
constructed in Chinese eclectic style, of concrete, bricks and rocks with its
walls and
columns to support its pitch roof of black tiles. The grand entrance is facing the street in

Tropical Carpenter Bee Foraging
The tropical carpenter bee, Xylocopa latipes, is widely dispersed throughout Southeast Asia. It inhabits
forests in warm tropical climates and constructs nests by burrowing into wood. It often makes long deep
tunnels in wooden rafters, fallen trees, telephone poles and the like, but is not found in living trees.
It is a very large, robust, solitary bee, shiny, fully black in colour with fuscous metallic blue-green or
purple in sunlight. Larger carpenter bees can range in size from one-half inch to one inch long,
and is among the largest bees of the world. It is a vital pollinator, helping farmers immensely
by pollinating a wide variety of plants.

Siu Ding Curates Incarnation Photo Exhibition Advocating Body Autonomy
Siu Ding (Liu Ngan-ling) - an artist, book designer, nude model and founder of Hong Kong Life Model Club
in 2017 - opens Incarnation photo exhibition to advocate body autonomy in conservative Hong Kong.
Liu also curates the annual Body Fest, Hong Kong's only nude-themed festival as 'a celebration of the
human body.'
The exhibition, part of Hong Kong International Photo Festival Satellite Exhibitions, showcases over 80
nudes by local photographer Simon C, taken in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. Models of different
age, race, sexual identity and shape are featured including some with disabilities.
Every human body is beautiful. Our body and flesh is part of nature, yet we seldom see it that way.
The images in Incarnation present a unique and precious landscape of naked bodies. Alluring like
mother nature, these bodies return to their raw aesthetic. Like the mountains, the sunset, and
the moon, their picturesque formations truly transcend the usual perceptions of our flesh.
Over the past 5 years, more than 20 nude models have joined the Incarnation project. Their bodies
are now part of the mountains, deserts and islands where they have set foot in, and back in the
studio, they become a different scenery.
Poems, proses and novels by 4 authors, Coco Shen, Estong, Atom Cheung and Lawrence Pan, in 2
languages and 4 dialects, are included in response to the photographic works in this exhibition. This
allows everyone to have a multimedia experience enabling a new imagination of the human body.
In addition, there are 4 seminars from nude photography to private shooting culture. Scholars, artists,
private photo shooting models, sex educators and promoters of sex culture will be invited to talk about
the history of nude photography, photography and the body, sharing private shooting issues related to
selfies, selling photos, slut-shaming - analyzing the public’s myths and misunderstandings about
"body autonomy".

Tiananmen Massacre Statue Removal and Vanishing Freedoms in Hong Kong
Hong Kongers bid goodbye to the Pillar of Shame as Hong Kong University (HKU) demands its removal,
a testament to the city's vanishing freedoms.
The 8-metre-high sculpture by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, composed of intertwined naked bodies
with mouths agape and outstretching hands, is one of the last remaining symbols of Hong Kong's
tradition of commemorating the Beijing Tiananmen Massacre on June 4th, 1989. In the last 5 weeks,
the Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China has been forced to disband and
its leaders arrested for incitement to subvert state power, the June Fourth Museum has been raided
with its exhibits removed, and its website blocked from Hong Kong. Police locked down Victoria Park
unprecedently this year to prevent the June 4 vigil, an annual tradition for 3 decades.
In requesting the removal of the Pillar of Shame, Hong Kong's top university is signalling that it
is ready to sacrifice its century-old tradition of academic freedom under the spectre of National
Security Law.
HKU has already shut down the century-old Student Union, barred student leaders from campus and
left 2 student leaders unaided after being arrested for terrorism. Similar incidents have
occurred at the Chinese University.
China passed its draconian Hong Kong National Security Law (NSL) on June 30, 2020. The most shocking
NSL- related incidents were the mass arrests of prodemocracy politicians for participating in a mock
primary election on 6 January 2021, and of senior management and editors of the prodemocracy media
Aapple Daily for alleged collusion with foreign forces on 17 June. Its offices were raided and
assets frozen, forcing it to ceased publication on 24 June.
In March, Beijing significantly changed the size of the electorate for elections for Hong Kong's Legislative
Council and Chief Executive, creating a system where democrats find themselves almost impossible to be nominated.
Candidates must be pre-screened by pro-Beijing groups and the NSL-police. Effectively, no one can run
in Hong Kong’s major elections without Beijing’s stamp of approval.
Currently, almost all of the city's prominent democracy leaders are either in jail, facing prosecution or
have fled overseas.
Nearly 50 civil society organisations have shut down or gone silent in the last 12 months, including
Demosisto led by Joshua Wong, Civic Party, Progressive Lawyers Group and Civil Human Rights
Front, organiser of the annual July 1 protest rally. In August, Professional Teachers' Union was
disbanded, ending its 48 years of history. In September, Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions,
its largest labour union, was forced to close. The purge of Hong Kong's civil society is still ongoing.
“The old cannot kill the young forever”, these words imprinted on the base of the Pillar of Shame will
not be forgotten by Hongkongers.

Deserted Near-Century-old Historic House with Revolutionary Past
An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted near-century-old house. The house was rated as a
Grade I historic building in 2009 and there is a revolutionary past.
The main part of the Western-style house is a 2-storey pitched-roof building divided into 2 units by
cross walls, with a verandah extension at the front and a kitchen and storeroom annexe at the rear.
It is likely that the building originally was 2 semi-detached living units. The balustrade to the first
floor verandah is formed of pierced screen block. The walls are constructed of bricks and plastered
with a faded pink finish. There are glazed and panelled wooden doors to the verandahs.
Built between 1920-30, the house is situated at a former farm which had been used as a depot for
weapon storage, ground for the manufacture of firearms required for planned uprisings associated
with the 1911 revolution, a meeting place of revolutionaries and a haven for disbanded
revolutionaries escaping from the Manchu vengeance.
