Deserted 19th Century Villa

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted villa.

The gorgeous villa from the 19th Century is located in a vineyard in the
rolling green hills of northern Portugal. It has ornate plasterwork and
Art Nouveau-styling.

The entire building is in a precarious state. The roof is collapsing and
the windows are mostly glass-less, exposing the interior to the elements.
The wooden floors are rotten.

Deserted Santorium from 1930s

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted sanatorium.

The construction of the sanatorium, for treatment of tuberculosis, began in 1932.
This large sanatorium included a chapel, a school and a building for laundry.
This unit housed and treated over 300 patients daily. As a cure was found for
this disease, the number of patients entering was substantially reduced,
leading to its closure in 1975. It became a popular spot for wargamers.

Deserted Century-Old Castle

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted castle.

The castle dates back to 1915, was built on a site of around 3 hectares.
The mistress of the house wanted to have a luxurious house where she could
throw fabulous parties, worthy of an aristocrat. Work was suspended in 1919
when the owner and his wife separated. Construction was never completed.

It changed hands a few times. In 1990, it was leased to a tourism company
who adapted the property into a leisure space with a restaurant, bar, nightclub and
meeting rooms. 4 years later, they went into bankruptcy and it became deserted.

Deserted 14th Century Convent

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted convent.

This was one of the first three convents of the Order of Friars Minor to be built
in Portugal, dating back to the end of the 14th century. It underwent several
expansions throughout its existence. However, it ended up being deserted,
because of its difficult access location.

In the 20th century, the convent fell into a state of degradation. It is currently
in a sad state of disrepair.

Deserted Villa in a Farm

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted villa in a farm.

The farm dates back to 1870s. The villa has a beautiful entrance hall with
wood-carved doors, an ornamented ceiling, and a blue round sofa. The sofa
had lost one of its legs and is leaning to one side.

The blue en white ornate plaster ceiling reads 'America visitando (visits)
Portugal'. An American soldier is shown arriving by ship and being welcomed
by a Portuguese soldier. Each corner of the ceiling ornament resembled
one of the four seasons.

Deserted Coal Mines from 1795

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted coal mine complex.

Founded in 1795, the coal mines exploited deposits of stone coal (anthracite)
discovered in the area. It employed 1800 people, producing 70% of coal in
Portugal. The mines has been deserted since 1970 and is currently in a sad
state of disrepair.

Porto Sunset

Gorgeous sunset viewed from Terreiro da Se, the square located in front of
Se (Cathedral), founded in the 12th Century in Porto. It is the second
largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon. Its historical centre was
declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Deserted City-centre Tong Lau

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted Tong Lau.

Completed in 1973, the 6-storey Chinese tenement building is located
right in the busy city centre. It has 2 units of 821 sq ft per floor.
One of them has a living room and 4 rooms. Apparently, the unit has
been deserted since 2015. Furniture and personal items are
scattered throughout.

Deserted Hospital from 1872

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted hospital.

The hospital was founded in 1872 by Mr Choi, a local businessman and philanthropist.
It mainly cared for the homeless, poor and sick people and provided burials
for those who were shipwrecked in the storm. In 1915, it was expanded and
officially renamed as a hospital. It focused on traditional Chinese medicine
treatment and was renovated in 1931 and 1951.

Unfortunately, after the opening of a more modern hospital in 1934, the number
of patients at this hospital dropped. It ceased operations in 1988
and became deserted since. It is rated as a Grade III historic building.

Deserted Village School from 1930

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted village school.

The school was built in 1930 with donations from the villagers. As it is located
in a remote village, it was difficult to obtain funding from the government.
As the village population grew, a larger campus was built and this one became
deserted. It is rated a Grade III historic building. At its heyday, there were 400
students. It has been deserted for a long time and is now used for storage.

People Mountain People Sea by Gary Card

People Mountain People Sea, a wacky, fabulous and weird world of acclaimed
British artist Gary Card at his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Inspired
by the vibrant fusion of East and West cultures in Hong Kong, Gary uses
various objects and elements he's observed while visiting the city.

Gary crafted a series of bold and unique artworks to transform the historic
Oi! Street Art Space, where animation and sound merge to create an immersive
visual and sensory experience. Open through July 28. Admissions free.

Spangle Butterfly

The Spangle (Papilio protenor) is a large swallowtail similar to the Great
Mormon, very common in Hong Kong and can be seen all year round.

The male Spangle is a velvety indigo-blue black, duller on the fore wing than
on the hind wing. The female is similar in colour, slightly lighter in shade with
no indigo on the fore wing. These large size butterflies They are similar
to male Great Mormon, but Spangle has more elongated hindwings.

Deserted Military Quarters

There are 7 buildings, 3-storey residence for former British military
personnel. The site has been deserted long before the 1997 handover.
Afterwards, ownership was passed onto the People's Liberation Army
which used them for storage. So wasteful.

Unfinished Villas in Upscale Area

An avid urban explorer ventures into a block of deserted unfinished villas.

The block has 6 units of 3-storey villas in an upscale area. The units have
floor to ceiling glass doors and windows plus balconies on the first and
second floor. There is no access road to the villas and thus, will be unable
to obtain an occupation permit. They remain unfinished with a bare bone
raw concrete structure, including open toilets without walls or doors.

Sea Breeze by Sujin Lee

"Sea Breeze" is part of "I Became You", solo exhibition by Sujin Lee at Saatchi
Yates Hong Kong at H Queen's, Hong Kong. Born in Jeju Island, and currently
living and working in Seoul, Lee's paintings are a celebration of female
friendship and sisterhood.

Lee takes inspiration from her intimate circle of friends as well as her life in
Seoul. This show encompasses 14 new paintings by the artist, which
delve further into her exploration of the self as well as her relationship
with others, specifically focusing on the female subject.

Last Throes of Deserted Tong Lau from 1950s

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted block of Tong Lau.

The Property comprises 8, 9, and 11-storey Chinese tenement buildings built
in the 1950s. They were sold by public auction by order of Lands Tribunal
for Compulsory Sales for Redevelopment in September 2023. At HK$6.3 billion,
this is Hong Kong’s largest compulsory sale transaction ever.

The plan is to develop 2 residential towers of 28 storeys each above a
3-storey podium accommodating commercial space and a clubhouse.

Deserted Haunted Monastery

The 2-storey monastery is located in the hills. Tree roots have invaded the first floor.
It is rumoured to be haunted and an Urbexer was pushed and fell with a twisted

HERA (Jasmin Siddiqui, 1981) is a Frankfurt-born German-Pakistani painter with
artistic roots in the graffiti and street art genre. She has been traveling the
world since 2001 painting large-scale murals. She was part of 'Artists for
Human Rights', the first ever street art exhibition inside the European
Parliament in Brussels in December 2022.

Abandoned WWII Pillbox

An avid urban explorer ventures into an abandoned pillbox from WWII.

Built in 1940, the pillbox is located in the hills overlooking a fiercely contested
area during the war. There are three loopholes/gun positions. Each has a semi-
circular metal frame which presumably was the gun mount. Outside each are the
metal shutters, heavily rusted. The side wall has fittings for four folding beds.
A water tank is located next to the entrance. Apart from the graffiti, this
pillbox is in relatively good condition.

Deserted Villa in Upmarket Area

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted villa in an upmarket area.

The villa was completed in 1988. It has 4 storeys with a nett area of 4,853 sq ft. The
skylight windows on the roof bring in natural light in the atrium. It has been
deserted for over 10 years. Some furniture remains in the villa
while most of the walls are covered with graffiti.

Deserted Love Hotel

An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted love hotel.

The 2-storey hotel has many rooms, each with a large bed and ensuite bathroom
with bathtub. Some rooms have electric motion round beds. Each room is uniquely
decorated, some with large sexy mural on the walls. Apparently, the hotel has
been deserted since July 2021. All beds and fixtures still remain.

CHAT - Factory of Tomorrow

Celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile
(CHAT), Factory of Tomorrow is a group exhibition that showcases artworks by
19 Asian artists, exploring the role of textiles in Hong Kong's past, present and future.
Through textile works, sculptures, immersive installations, and videos,
artists examine themes such as technology, diversity, climate change,

Ephemeral by Atelier Sisu

Ephemeral is an immersive public art experience that explores a dream-like
installation of light, soundscapes and giant, translucent rainbow-hued bubbles
That light up with changing colours in the evening. It evokes the transient
nature of life and the fragility of the world around us – bringing people
together in fleeting moments of connection and community through
a playful shared experience.

Created by Sydney-based design studio Atelier Sisu, the immersive public art
experience has captivated audiences in over 40 regions worldwide.
