Hong Kong | 2019 29 May 2019  Women Breaking into Bamboo Scaffolding Work Hong Kong is the last frontier of bamboo scaffolding where skyscrapers shoot up daily and more than five million bamboo rods, each six to seven metres long, are used every year. It takes strength, skill and intellect to be a bamboo artist, erecting intricate webs of sky-high walls, up to 1,000 feet high, and platforms strong enough to hold a legion of construction workers. Women are traditionally barred from this work, which is considered dangerous. The door is being cracked opened as the first woman apprentice is being trained last year. Jordan . They March from Southorn Playground in Wanchai to China Liaison Office in Western District. It has been 30 years since the rise and fall of the 1989 Democracy Movement in China. The 50-day democratic movement led by students ended with a brutal military crackdown on June 4. A confidential US government document, revealed in 2014, reported that a Chinese internal assessment estimated that at least 10,454 civilians were killed. Wanchai . Hong Kong | 2019 25 May 2019  Thousands Join Global 24 Hour Project for Street Photography Right after midnight tonight, thousands of people from 725 cities in 100 countries will begin to capture city life one photo for each hour for 24 hours, sharing them on Instagram and other social media. This year, the focus is on women's stories to support women's rights. The #24HourProject began in 2012, Renzo Grande (@renzogrande) from New York and Los Angeles-based Sam Smotherman (@smutty5ohhh) wanted to compare their two cities in a daylong series of street photos. Hong Kong | 2019 24 May 2019  Transient Bubbles Farewell Yue Man Square Transient bubbles created by Artists Anita Cheng and Heily Lai, to say farewell to Yue Man Sqaure, the once bustling town centre of Kwun Tong which is due for demolition and redevelopment. They are both nostalgic and sad about the fate of the playground of their youth. A closely-knit community of residents and businesses have forced out by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) with inadequate compensation. Many fear that Kwun Tong will lose its character and become unaffordable to the grassroot citizens. This is an end of an era for Kwun Tong and Hong Kong. Kwun Tong . Hong Kong | 2019 23 May 2019  Vanishing Tong Lau Tong Lau, Chinese tenement houses built between the late 18th century and the 1960s, are fast disappearing in Hong Kong. They have commercial space on the ground floor and residential units above lending much character to city streets with their wide verandahs and high ceilings. Hong Kong | 2019 21 May 2019  Reflecting on Inner Self as Visual Artists 'Reflecting on Inner Self as Visual Artists', an exhibition showcasing the works Professor Aser But and eight elites who graduated from the Department of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic from the 1980s to the early 1990s. They include Jackson Lee, Lammie Lam, Frank Kwok, Kinsan Chung, Gideon Lai, Hilton Tong, Sindy Lau and Tom Lau. With over two years in its curation, the exhibition presents more than 100 works, featuring the achievements of the nine award-winning fine artists through their journey of creative art discovery over the past 30 years. Wanchai . Hong Kong | 2019 18 May 2019  Heather Explores Ma Wan Ghost Village Heather, an educator from Portsmouth, loves urban exploration and checks out the abandoned village of Ma Wan. Once a thriving fishing village with stilt houses, restaurants and a school, Ma Wan fishing village is now a ghost town. The residents were evicted by the government in 2011, some unwillingly, to give way to Park Island, a huge gated housing estate developed by Sun Hung Kai Properties for 5,000 families. The island has a long history, dating back to Neolithic times, much of which has been swallowed in recent years by the ever hungry need for housing development. Complete Neolithic human skeletal remains were found in tombs at Tung Wan in 1997. Tsing Ma Bridge linking Kowloon with Lantau Island provides a dramtic background. Ma Wan . Hong Kong | 2019 11 May 2019  Ng Chung Opens Cigar Box Hong Kong artist Ng Chung's latest Cigar Box series are paintings about the different people surrounding his life, such as his friends, daughter, collectors, and apprentices. In this latest body of works, he explores his relationships with these people, or sometimes the objects related to them. Vietnam | 2019 9 May 2019  Clown Fish and Anemone A clown fish comes out of its sea anemone hiding in the An Thoi Islands in southern Phu Quoc, Vietnam. The 15 islands that make up the Archipelago, aka Phu Quoc Marine Park, is not an ideal location for Scuba diving. Over-fishing has depleted pelagic (big fish, eg: sharks and menta rays). Vietnam | 2019 7 May 2019  Yukaloo by James Turrell Yukaloo by James Turrell, a leading American artist who uses light as a medium for his immersive installations. Associated with the Light and Space movement of the 1960s, Turrell has dedicated his practice to what he has deemed perceptual art, investigating the materiality of light and the sensorial experience of space, color, and perception. Yukaloo is an aperture within which LEDs are engineered to change colours gradually over the course of several hours. Coloured light emitted from the work fills the space, creating an immersive atmosphere similar to the awe-inspiring fashion in which the sky changes from late afternoon to night. It retains the feel of a genuine neighborhood with pungent smells and live chicken markets, despite the explosion of trendy restaurants, hip bars and shops that now grace the First, Second, Third and High street. Hong Kong | 2019 5 May 2019  Lin Fa Temple Lin Fa Kung (literally means Temple of Lotus) in Tai Hang was constructed in 1863, during the Qing dynasty, and was reconstructed in 1986 and 1999. The temple is for the worship of Kwun Yam, the Goddess of Mercy and its architecture is unique and rare in Hong Kong. It was protected as a Declared Monument in 2014. Tai Hang . Hong Kong | 2019 3 May 2019  SOS for Venezuela Marianm and her fellow Venezuelans living in Hong Kong signal SOS for Venezuela on May Day, in response to call by opposition leader Juan Guaido, for protests throughout the world in solidarity with the mass demonstrations within the country. After Guaido declared himself interim president in January, he is recognised as Venezuela's legitimate president by the United States and other countrues. Clashes continue between protesters and forces led by the president, Nicolas Maduro in Caracas. Maduro had been prepared to leave the country for Cuba until Putin advised against it. Central . Hong Kong | 2019 2 May 2019  Old and New in Tai Hang A slum until the 1990s, Tai Hang lies in the shadow of the glitzy Causeway Bay. It has witnessed rapid urbanisation and development around the area over the past few decades. Village houses became low-rise Tong Lau (Chinese tenement houses) which then became the luxury residential high-rise buildings today. With the rapid gentrification came the trendy restaurants, bars and hip coffee shops giving new life to the neighbourhood. Only a few car repair shops, traditional cafes (cha chaan tengs) and dai pai dongs remain. Its unique history and laid-back ambience is rapidly fading. Tai Hang .
