Trio of Caravaggio's Masterpieces

The celebrated trio of Caravaggio paintings: the Vocazione di San Matteo (The
Calling of St Matthew), the Martirio di San Matteo (The Martyrdom of St Matthew)
and San Matteo e l'angelo (St Matthew and the Angel), known collectively as
the St Matthew cycle, are free for all to admire at the opulent Baroque Chiesa
di San Luigi dei Francesi (Church of St Louis), built in 1589.

These three canvases, housed in the Cappella Contarelli to the left of the main
altar, are among the earliest of Caravaggio's religious works, painted between
1600 and 1602, featuring a down-to-earth realism and the stunning use of
chiaroscuro (the bold contrast of light and dark).

Exiled Author Ma Jian Speaks at Tai Kwun after U-Turn

Exciled Chinese author Ma Jian urges courage to defend freedom of speech
after a twisted struggle to find a venue to host his talks at Hong Kong
International Literary Festival (HKILF). The venue battle fuelled growing
concerns that semi-autonomous Hong Kong's freedoms are fast disappearing
under an increasingly assertive Beijing.

Ma, whose books are banned in mainland China where he is not welcome, is
due to promote his latest novel 'China Dream' at two speaking events at
HKILF hosted by Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts. They were cancelled
two day before when Tai Kwun's director Timothy Calnin said: 'We do not
want Tai Kwun to become a platform to promote the political interests
of any individual'.

The venue reinstated them at the eleventh hour Friday after a replacement
location also dropped out with tremendous public and media outcry. Ma says
Tai Kwun's last-minute change of heart showed that 'self-censorship had failed'.

Ma Jian, a Chinese author's two appearances at Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage
and Arts at the International Literary Festival have been cancelled days
after he revealed several publishers in the city refused to print his
latest novel - China Dream, which is critical of the Beijing leaders.

Tai Kwun's director Timothy Calnin said: 'We do not want Tai Kwun to become
a platform to promote the political interests of any individual.' Ma Jian
responded: 'My politics are simple: I believe in free thought and free speech'.
PEN Hong Kong, the international writers' association, is 'deeply concerned'
and the Hong Kong Journalist is 'extreme concerned' about the case.
Ma's 2 seminars had been cancelled after a new venue also withdrawn.

In a last minute turnaround, Tai Kwun agrees on Friday night to
host Ma's 2 events as scheduled.

Last Friday, the first international solo exhibition of Australia-based
Chinese political cartoonist Badiucao was cancelled, citing safety
concerns and Chinese authorities' threats against the artist.

art-activist punk rock group Pussy Riot, believe young Hong Kong political
activists are the Key to change. Founded in 2011, Pussy Riot are known for

inside them,' Nika says.

An art exhibition 'Gongle', by Chinese artist Badiucao, has been cancelled
after threats made by the Chinese authorities relating to the artist.
