Historic Near-Century-old Tsz Yeung Study Hall in Yuen Long
The Tsz Yeung Study Hall is located at 21-23 Tai Kei Leng Village in Yuen Long.
It is a single-entry building without elaborate decoration. There is a
couplet on the outdoor wall of the Study Hall, which reads 'The four
principles of Tsz education, breeds three talents.'
The study hall was built in 1924 by the 3 sons of Leung Tsz Yeung. Before
the Japanese occupation (1941-1945), it mainly provided traditional private
tutoring for the children of Tai Kei Leng Village and Ma Tin Village. It was
closed after the war. From the 1970s to the end of the 1980s, the study
hall became Ching Sum Kindergarten, and its plaque can be found nearby.
The study hall is also the ancestral hall of the Leung clan. Until recent years,
the clan would set up pun choi banquets for guests during weddings and
major festivals. At present, the study hall is managed by each of the
3 branches of Leung's descendants in turns, switching every 2 years.

Exploring Most Haunted Abandoned Mansion
An avid urban explorer ventures into a most haunted abandoned mansion.
The 2-storey mansion was built during World War II and was completed in 1941. The building is made
of concrete, blending Chinese and Western styles. There are both Western-style pillars and Chinese-
style arcades. It is rated as a Grade III historic building. The front of the mansion is converted
into a parking lot, and the back is surrounded by trees. The ground is covered with leaves, and
some of the rooms are entangled with roots and vines.
After the mansion was abandoned in the 1970s, there were rumours that many villagers heard the
sound of dining or playing mahjong in the house at night, like a family gathering, but the house was
dark and empty. Therefore, it is listed as the top of 10 most haunted houses in Hong Kong.

Exploring Deserted Massive Movie Studios
An avid urban explorer ventures into an abandoned massive movie studio complex.
The administrative building, built in 1960, is the most distinctive structure
in the studios. For the 1960s, the architectural design was very bold and
avante-garde. The 4-storey building has very flamboyant windows with
innovative design, in order to establish a unique, enterprising and pioneering
image. It remains the most iconic building in the studios complex.
The entire studio was formally completed in 1965, with 15 studios, 2 exterior
movie sets, editing rooms, printing rooms, canteens, staff dormitories
and other facilities. It was the largest privately owned Hollywood-style
movie studios in the Chinese-speaking world. In 2015, it was rated as a
Grade I historic building. It is a pity that the cinema is being demolished,
and a large number of expensive equipment and historical films have been deserted.

a 2-storey basement, with a cinema of nearly 3,000 sq ft, a private swimming pool and gardens. It

The villa was built in 1971, rated as a Grade II historic building in 2016, and is believed to be deserted in
2019. It is built in a functional and simple modernist architectural style. There is a lawn and a terrace
outside the master bedroom and dining room on the first floor. The garden environment was likely very

Jimmy Lai + 8 Jailed for 8-18 months for Aug 18 Rally Prompted Global Condemnation
Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, 73, was handed a 12 month prison sentence on Friday for organizing
and participating in an unauthorised assembly on August 18, 2019. 8 others were given 8-18 months jail terms.
About 1.7 million Hong Kong residents joined in a peaceful rally against the Extradition to China
amendment at Victoria Park on the said date.
Except for Leung Kwok-hung 'Long Hair' and Au Nok-hin, the rest were convicted for the first time and
sentenced yesterday (Aug 16) in West Kowloon Magistracy.
Leung Kwok-hung was sentenced to 18 months; Cy Ho to 8 months; Au Nok-hin was sentenced to 10
months; all with immediate imprisonment. Martin Lee was sentenced to 11 months in prison
suspended 24 months; Margaret Ng for 12 months suspended 24 months; Albert Ho
for 12 months suspended 24 months; Leung Yiu-Chung for 8 months suspended 12 months.
Metaphorically, this is a prison term for all 1.7 million Hong Kong residents who joined the rally on that day.
Judge Amanda Woodcock said when sentencing that although the cases did not involve violence, it can
be seen from the protests of 2019 that once the masses gather, their emotions would run high, and
result in violent conflicts. Therefore, potential risks and behaviours cannot be ignored. Obviously
it is a challenge to police power, law and order, so imprisonment is the only appropriate sentence.
The sentence was swiftly covered by the international media. Many British, American and Canadian
politicians issued statements of condemnation. Among them, the last Hong Kong Governor Chris
Patten criticized Chinese Communist Party for continuing to brutally violate the rule of law
and freedom in Hong Kong.
U.S. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted that she is sad and disturbed that Martin Lee and
other democrats have been sentenced for free and peaceful demonstrations. This is another sign of
Beijing's violation of the rule of law.
Yamini Mishra, regional director of Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific region, said that Hong Kong
government 'wrongly accused, convicted and sentenced' democrats, 'reflecting Hong Kong
government's intention to silence all political opposition.'

Hong Kong Protests Prominent at World Press Photo Exhibition after being Nixed
The prestigeous World Press Photo Contest Exhibition was initially
scheduled to open on March 1 at Baptist University, which cancelled
at the last minute after a pro-Beijing newspaper accused it of inciting violence.

category, attracting lots of attention.
The winning images by Asfouri include a shot of a police officer brutally
kneeing the neck of a downed protester and a group of teenage girls in
school uniforms holding hands in a human chain protest against the
now-withdrawn extradition bill in September of 2019.
The exhibition features 10 visual stories including pro-democracy protests
in Iraq, Algeria, and Hong Kong and other overlaying themes like climate change.
