 Exploring Deserted Haunted Air Raid Shelter An avid urban explorer ventures into a deserted air raid shelter in city-centre. During World War II, the government built air-raid shelters in various places in Hong Kong to allow citizens to take refuge during Japanese air raids. The path in the shelter has many twists and bends, with ramps. There are numbered signs along the path with forks, which makes it easy to get lost. It was dark and gloomy inside and the atmosphere was spooky. It is rumoured that these tunnels are haunted as they were part of a system that the Japanese Secret police used to "interrogate" people between 1941-45. Executions also took place within the tunnels. A shrine was built in front of the only remaining open portal to appease the spirits. A giant red banner was mounted above the portal for the same purpose a few years ago but it is no longer there. There are 2 buildings - an office and a recreational centre with a ping ping table and many trophies. It appears to have been deserted since 2016. The 3-storey main building with stables sits on a 4,000 sq m site on the hillside surrounded with trees. Since 1992, it provides all levels of riding lessons and activities to the public by instructors with qualifications from the British Horse Society (BHS) or the equivalent. Facilities in the School include an office, a lecture room, 2 paddocks, a stable which can accommodate 36 horses and ponies, changing rooms and parking spaces. It has 8 storeys of a 8 units on each floor with a nett area of 187-380 sq ft. Some units are partitioned into smaller rooms. Others are chicly designed in the interior. It appears to have been deserted since 2010 and a large number of personal items and furniture are scattered throughout the building. The estate was completed on 1975. 3 of the blocks are deserted with 15 storeys of over 200 units per block with a nett area of 130.1- 562.7 sq ft. Some units are partitioned into subdivided rooms. It has been deserted since 2020. Furniture and personal items are scattered throughout the building. One of the units has been badly burnt after a fire and was totally charred. The cinema opened in 1978 with 499 seats, but due to persistent shortage of audience, it was closed in 1987 and has been deserted for 34 years. The interior of the cinema is dark and quite spooky. It is said to be one of the top 10 most haunted places in Hong Kong. In 2010, a police officer discovered that a man had hanged himself in the cinema. It is rumoured that the officer heard the sound of footsteps, went inside to check, and unexpectedly discovered the body. Since then, there have been claims that residents and tourists passing by have heard faint footsteps from inside the cinema. Hong Kong | 2022 21 May 2022  Artist Ophelia Jarcarini Dances for Intraverse at French May Dance performance presented by French artist Ophelia Jacarini on Central Market on Thursday to kick-off Intraverse - digital sculptures capturing the motion of her dance using Virtual Reality technology, bringing an interactive experience to the audience. Part of French May 2022 highlighted programme, shown on Interactive Wall on G/F Central Market during 19 May - 30 June and Nina Mall 1 during 26 May - 30 June. Hong Kong-based French artist Jacarini is driven by her practice that combines fine arts, dance, sculpture and technology. Her fascination in motion and capturing it, got her to explore different techniques to produce sculpted formations created by motion within a space. Studying Fine Arts and Fashion in Paris in addition to her 17 years of ballet training, Jacarini utilises methodologies such as photography, videography, hologram, virtual reality and artificial intelligence to achieve her aim to freeze motion within time and space, converting the invisible form to a tangible, fleeting, ephemeral and entropic characteristics of motion and making it visible to the audience. Hong Kong | 2020 18 May 2022  Flaming Trumpet Blooming Flaming Trumpet, aka Fire-cracker Vine, so named as the flowers resemble firecrackers, is a plant species of the genus Pyrostegia of the family Bignoniaceae. It is endemic to southern Brazil, Bolivia, northeastern Argentina, Paraguay and Asia, and is now a popularly cultivated garden species. The flowering season is from January to June each year, and can last for more than half a year. The orange-red blossoms are beautiful and are symbolic of prosperity. Tai Hang . Hong Kong | 2021 16 May 2022  Sakura Snow by Akiko Yamashita Hana Fubuki is an interactive installation by Akiko Yamashita for the immersive experience at Jumpstarter 2022 at 6/F, K11 Musea, through 15 May. Inspired by nature’s ability to help us see what is otherwise invisible to the naked eye, such as the passing of time, Hana Fubuki refers to “Sakura snow,” or the way falling cherry blossom leaves can resemble a gentle snowfall or a swirling blizzard as they are carried off by the wind. The gestures and movements of audience become the wind that powers this installation, which combines the woodblock print techniques of traditional Ukiyo-e art with 3D animations and interactive technology to bring the landscape to life. Just as seasons change and time streams past us like Sakura petals floating down river, the installation will change and evolve over the course of the exhibition. Tsimshatsui . Hong Kong | 2022 15 May 2022  Mysterious Deserted Hindu Temple The deserted Hindu Temple was completed in the 1960s and was built by Nepalese Gurkhas soldiers stationed at the camp to worship Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction. After 1996, the Gurkhas left, and the Hindu temple was deserted. In 2010, it was rated as a Grade III historical building. The temple is a gray-greenish hexagonal building with 6 spires on top, which is crown-shaped, symbolising a lotus flower that is regarded as a beautiful and sacred in Hinduism. It is the only lotus-shaped building in Hong Kong, rare and unique. The building is surrounded with bushes and no decoration is left in the temple. Each of the 6 sides has a portal, except the southeast side, with a small yellow window above the door. The interior of the building is painted red and green, with a mysterious atmosphere. Built in 1896, the building perches on the hill and is now hidden in the bushes. Little information is available on the building but from the layout and design, it is most likely a government quarters for foreign workers. There is a fireplace in each of the rooms. The roof has collapsed and only open space remain where windows were. Roots and vines have intertwined with the structure. Hong Kong | 2022 13 May 2022  Former Bishop Zen and Others Arrested by Hong Kong National Security Police 90-year-old Cardinal Joseph Zen, Hong Kong's Bishop Emeritus, along with 3 other people were arrested by the city's national security police on Wednesday for their involvement in a humanitarian relief fund. The arrests could signal a new wave of detentions under the national security law since former Secretary for Security and Chief Security John Lee was elected chief executive of Hong Kong. He will take office in July and widely seen as Beijing's pointman to further draconian control of the city, already with drastically reduced liberties. Zen, senior barrister Margaret Ng, professor Hui Po-keung and popular singer Denise Ho were arrested under the national security law for allegedly colluding with foreign forces by serving as trustees for the now-disbanded 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund. Cy Ho, another trustee already in jail for other reasons, will face the same charges. 'The Holy See has learned with concern the news of the arrest of Cardinal Zen and is following the situation with extreme attention,' the Vatican press office said in a statement. Causeway Bay . There are exquisite tiles on all sides of the exterior walls, and a row of potted plants in front of the garden. Hong Kong | 2022 11 May 2022  Exploring Deserted City-centre Houses of Pleasure An avid urban explorer ventures into deserted houses of pleasure in the city-centre. The 10-storey building was completed in 1957. It was the tallest building in the district then and also the first commercial-residential mixed-use Grade A building with a deed of mutual covenant. In the 1990s, there were many massage parlours and one-woman brothels. It was acquired by a developer in 2011. As the number of vacant units increased, Triads broke in and turned them into brothels. By the end of 2016, 149 units in the building were under Triad control. In its heyday, the building had nearly 200 brothels and is well-known internationally by tourists. There were Japanese pornographic websites with dedicated webpages for these brothels and guides for their services. As 4 gangs were fighting over territory here, frequent crimes with knife and blood were reported over the years. In 2017, 100 police officers were mobilised working with the developer to clear the illegally occupied units. The brothels appear to have been shut down since 2020 with furnitures and personal items scattered throughout the apartments. The magazine was built in 1939 by the British army to prepare for World War II to store ammunition for the nearby 3 batteries for coastal defence. Its main chamber has a thick metal roof to defend against bombing. It is now slightly flooded and muddy. Skeleton of a small animal is found on the floor. The area has been overgrown with thorny bushes. The site has been deserted long before the 1997 handover. An avid urban explorer ventures into a semi-deserted luxury villa complex in the most upscale district in Hong Kong. Perched on the hill, the villa has a nett area of 4,721 sq ft in an extensive plot. It was built in around 1930 and commands expansive seaview. The complex includes many 2 and 3-storey buildings, some connected with each other and some standalone accessible via winding paths. There is an outdoor bean-shaped swimming pool and a giant 2-storey-tall slide. It was on the market for $2 billion in 2017. Most parts of the compound appears to have been deserted since 1987. A 2-storey mansion, a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles comprising a main building and an annex block, is deserted and swallowed up by nature. Despite its colonial -style characteristics in the walls, balcony and stone columns, the building has a traditional Chinese pitched roof supported on wooden purlins and battens while covered by Chinese clay tiles. Another notable feature includes the courtyard, as well as the layout of the rooms, which resembles that of traditional Chinese residences. Located in the middle of the roof parapet of the main building is a semi-circular pediment engraved with the name of the mansion in Chinese. Meditating at the balcony on the first floor is soothing. The non-profit kindergarten is located in a high-end residential area at Mid-Levels and started operation in 1992. It is a 3-storey building with an outdoor playground, music room, language room, activity room and an auditorium. Relocated in 2012 and deserted until now. It is currently being cleared and demolished. There were lots of graffiti and many life-size children's dolls, one of which lies on the stairs. The 2-storey shophouse was built with grey bricks, the door has a granite frame with a Qing Dynasty wooden door and shutter gate. The date of completion is unknown, but is believed to be over 100 years ago. It is one of the existing commercial and residential tenements in this old market area. It is rated a Grade II historic buliding. The ceiling of the ground floor has partially collapsed exposing gorgeous and colourful panels on the first floor. It has been deserted for a while.
