Built in 1871, the buildings were originally a hospital of charitable institutions, and later a military college. The hospital was used to treat the mentally ill, and electroshock therapy was used extensively here, along with experimental operations on the nervous system. Facilities included a laboratory of clinical research, one of pathology, one radiology, one of electrotherapy and an operating room for intervention to the nervous system. The asylum closed down in the early 1980s and has been abandoned ever since. Very little damage could be seen except natural decay on the old corridors and rooms. At the end of the 1960s, Italians discovered the joys of leisure and the fun of theme parks during the economic boom. A sort of Disneyland of Northern Italy, was born in this way: today, it has become a ghost town. The theme park included panoramic circuits, sports fields, theme hotels, restaurants, funfairs, miniature golf courses, skating rinks, a zoo, a medieval castle and many dance halls. The Minaret, the symbol of the theme park, stands out in the sky. There was a long shopping gallery on the ground floor, while on the first and second floors, there were flats of about 70 square metres each. Today the entire structure is in ruins, the walls covered with coloured murals, a legacy of the many rave parties that have taken place within these walls over the last 20 years.
