Its name is derived from the Latin word "spongia", the spot where rainwater was collected. The rectangular building with an inner courtyard was built in a mixed Gothic and Renaissance style between 1516 and 1522 by Paskoje Milicevic Mihov. After 14 Years of debate, rehash and management reshuffle, Hong Kong’s M+ museum—Asia’s first institution dedicated to 20th- and 21st-century visual culture— finally opens today. As the centerpiece for the West Kowloon Cultural District, the museum had an initial price tag of $760 million and a target opening date of 2017. Concern over the future of this museum, which boasts nearly 8,000 works in its collection, over-shadows the opening. The head of the West Kowloon Cultural District, Henry Tang, on Thursday appealed to the public to be open and inclusive when they view art at the M+ Museum, saying the works on display are a reflection of society's development. Tang said that 'we will uphold and encourage freedom of artistic expression and creativity. On the other hand, our dedicated curatorial team will ensure that all the exhibitions will comply with the laws, including the national security law.' The opening exhibitions, which cover themes like Hong Kong's visual culture since the 60s and contemporary Chinese art, contain works with political undertones, such as a suit with faces of late Chinese leader Mao Zedong printed on it. But an artwork called "Study in Perspective: Tian'anmen" by Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei, showing the artist flipping a middle finger in Tiananmen Square, will not be displayed. Attacks on the collection’s content—in particular the work by Ai Weiwei—from the city’s pro-Beijing politicians shocked the art world locally and abroad. Completed in 1906, the church was built in Victorian Gothic style with red brick and granite. It is rated as a Grade I historic building. The 2 deserted buildings, Amahs’ Quarters and Verger's Cottage, are at the rear. They were built in around 1910 also in red brick with granite detailing. Together with the 2-storey Old Vicarage built in 1909, they are rated as Grade II historic building. Graffiti is found on the walls and bushes overgrown on the outside. French artist Justine Emard’s “Co(AI)existence” (2017) gives a futuristic view where humans and AI co-exist. In the video, Japanese actor and dancer Mirai Moriyama uses signals and body language to interact wi th a humanoid developed by Osaka University. He dances around the humanoid, a tube light in his hands seeming to guide the latter to mimic his movements and to eventually interact with him, resulting in a mesmerising show. Central . It is older than the Kowloon Public Library. The second floor rooftop is a youth recreation centre of 1,000 sq ft, built with corrugated galvanised iron sheets, steel frame and glass windows. It consists of 2 single storey buildings and includes a basketball court which is rare for primary schools in the area. It has 12 classrooms, 2 computer rooms, a music room, a visual art room and a library. It has been deserted since 2006 when a new campus was built next door. All of the rooms have been cleared of furniture. Graffiti abound on the walls inside and outside.
