Click for details)Tectonic shifts had shaken up the Hong Kong political landscape in the past few days. On the back of its success in securing amendments to the government's political reform proposals but facing a bitter split with its former allies, the Democratic Party aims to seek more dialogue with Beijing loyalists about democratisation beyond 2012. As lawmakers yesterday passed by 46 votes to 12 the proposed changes for the 2012 Legislative Council election, the Beijing-friendly Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong invited further co-operation with the Democrats. The latter expressed interest in joining a cross-party platform to study the way to universal suffrage. The new-found warmth between the formerly bitter rivals contrasted with the bitter reproaches from some opponents of the changes.
